A yacht can present beautifully at the dock and still carry six-figure liabilities below the waterline, behind finished panels, or inside incomplete service records. This used yacht inspection checklist helps buyers separate cosmetic appeal from vessel condition before making an offer, removing contingencies, or scheduling delivery.
For a premium brokerage purchase, inspection is not a formality. It is the point at which the vessel’s stated specifications, maintenance history, operating condition, and market value are tested against independent evidence. The right process protects the buyer while giving a well-maintained yacht the opportunity to justify its price.
Start With the Right Inspection Strategy
A buyer should not rely on one walkthrough alone. A proper evaluation generally includes a broker-led viewing, a qualified marine survey, an engine survey when appropriate, and a sea trial. The scope depends on the yacht’s age, construction, propulsion package, flag, location, and intended use.
A late-model express cruiser with documented dealer maintenance may require a different level of scrutiny than a 15-year-old long-range motoryacht, sailing yacht, catamaran, or internationally located vessel. Larger yachts can also have complex systems for stabilization, watermaking, climate control, navigation, tender handling, and onboard power. Each system has a condition and replacement value that should inform the transaction.
Before arranging surveys, confirm that the seller will provide reasonable access to the vessel, records, machinery spaces, lockers, and equipment. A serious seller should also accommodate a haul-out and sea trial as part of an accepted offer, subject to customary terms.
Used Yacht Inspection Checklist Before Survey Day
The initial onboard review should establish whether the yacht merits the cost and time of a full due-diligence process. Walk through the vessel methodically rather than focusing only on the salon, staterooms, and exterior presentation.
Documentation and ownership records
Ask to review the title or Coast Guard documentation, current registration, lien status information where available, builder’s certificate, prior bills of sale, and evidence that the party selling the yacht has authority to do so. For foreign-flagged or internationally located yachts, documentation review may require additional attention to registration, import status, tax treatment, and closing procedures.
Maintenance records matter as much as a service claim. Request engine and generator service logs, invoices for major repairs, oil analysis reports, haul-out records, bottom-paint history, survey reports, warranties, and records for upgraded electronics or mechanical equipment. Missing records do not automatically make a yacht unsuitable, but they increase uncertainty and should affect both pricing and contingency planning.
Hull, deck, and exterior condition
Inspect the hull sides in changing light for mismatched paint, rippling, repaired impact areas, stress cracks, and inconsistent gelcoat. Look closely around through-hulls, transducers, trim tabs, shafts, struts, rudders, and swim platforms. A recent bottom paint job can be positive, but it should not replace a haul-out inspection of the running gear and underwater surfaces.
On deck, check for soft spots, cracked caulking, loose hardware, water intrusion around hatches and portlights, damaged nonskid, and corrosion around rails or fasteners. On sailing yachts, inspect chainplates, standing rigging, mast fittings, winches, furlers, sails, and deck penetrations. On a catamaran, pay particular attention to bridgedeck condition, hull alignment, and signs of loading or impact damage.
Machinery spaces and propulsion
A clean engine room is not proof of excellent maintenance, but a neglected one often reveals itself quickly. Look for fuel, oil, or coolant leaks; corroded fittings; loose wiring; deteriorated hoses; standing water; excessive rust; and inaccessible service points. Verify that bilge pumps, blowers, fire suppression equipment, battery banks, chargers, and shore-power connections appear properly maintained.
For diesel-powered yachts, an engine survey should address hours, service history, fault codes where available, operating temperatures, exhaust condition, mounts, cooling systems, fuel delivery, and transmission performance. A surveyor may recommend oil and coolant samples. This is an added cost, but it can be justified on higher-value vessels or where the maintenance record is limited.
What the Marine Survey Must Cover
The independent marine surveyor works for the buyer, not the broker, seller, or insurer. Select a surveyor with relevant experience in the vessel type and construction. A surveyor who routinely evaluates production powerboats may not be the best fit for a performance sailing yacht, a steel-hulled expedition yacht, or a large multihull.
The survey should assess structural condition, safety compliance, visible electrical and plumbing systems, machinery installation, navigation equipment, tanks, steering, sanitation, and general seaworthiness. It should also identify deficiencies by priority, distinguishing immediate safety concerns from maintenance items and elective upgrades.
Pay close attention to moisture readings and the surveyor’s interpretation of them. Elevated readings alone do not always mean serious structural damage. Readings must be considered alongside construction method, location, tapping results, visible cracking, prior repairs, and the yacht’s storage history. The same principle applies to cosmetic cracking, corrosion, or outdated equipment: context determines whether an issue is manageable or material.
A haul-out is one of the most valuable parts of the inspection. It allows the surveyor to inspect the bottom, keel or running surface, propellers, shafts, rudders, transducers, anodes, through-hulls, and evidence of grounding or blistering. Do not accept a seller’s statement that the yacht was recently hauled as a substitute for an independent review unless the surveyor agrees that the available documentation and timing are adequate.
Treat the Sea Trial as an Operating Test
A sea trial should demonstrate how the yacht performs under load, not simply confirm that it can leave the slip. Plan enough time for cold starts, docking, acceleration, cruising speed, steering response, transmission shifts, generator operation, stabilization equipment, electronics, and onboard systems.
During the trial, observe engine smoke, vibration, unusual noise, temperature readings, steering play, tracking, and water intrusion. Test major equipment in realistic conditions where possible. Air conditioning, watermakers, bow and stern thrusters, windlasses, davits, autopilots, radar, and tender systems can be costly to repair or replace.
The sea trial also exposes practical fit. A yacht may survey well but still be wrong for its intended owner if visibility is limited, the tender arrangement is impractical, cruising speed is below expectations, or maneuvering requires more crew confidence than anticipated. Those are not defects, but they are valid decision factors.
Evaluate Safety, Comfort, and Future Ownership Costs
Inspect life rafts, fire extinguishers, fixed fire systems, carbon monoxide detectors, navigation lights, emergency steering arrangements, bilge alarms, and grounding protection. Check expiration dates and service tags. Safety equipment may be a relatively modest line item compared with engines or hull work, but deficiencies can affect insurance, delivery, and immediate usability.
Interior condition deserves a disciplined review as well. Open lockers, inspect beneath mattresses, look inside cabinetry, and check headliners for staining or odor. Test toilets, showers, freshwater pumps, galley appliances, refrigeration, lighting, and air conditioning. Water intrusion and mold can be particularly expensive when they originate from deck hardware, windows, or plumbing hidden behind finished joinery.
Create a post-survey budget that separates required repairs, near-term maintenance, upgrades, and discretionary cosmetic work. A yacht with a $75,000 price adjustment may still be the more expensive acquisition if it needs deferred mechanical work, outdated electronics, and a full exterior refit. Conversely, a well-documented yacht with recent capital improvements can justify a stronger price because it reduces the buyer’s immediate exposure.
Use Findings to Negotiate With Precision
The survey report is not a reason to reopen every detail of the original negotiation. It is a tool for addressing material deficiencies, safety issues, undisclosed damage, and repairs that reasonably affect value or intended use. Focus requests on documented findings and obtain repair estimates when the scope is significant.
Buyers generally have three practical paths after survey: proceed as agreed, negotiate a price adjustment or seller repair, or withdraw under the inspection contingency. The right choice depends on the severity of findings, the availability of comparable yachts, the seller’s responsiveness, and the buyer’s tolerance for managing a refit.
A competent brokerage team can coordinate access, survey scheduling, repair discussions, insurance considerations, and closing documentation without taking the place of the buyer’s independent surveyor or legal and tax advisors. For buyers evaluating yachts in San Diego or elsewhere, that coordination keeps a complex transaction moving while the technical evidence is reviewed carefully.
The best purchase is not always the yacht with the shortest deficiency list. It is the yacht whose condition, documentation, price, and future ownership plan align clearly enough that the buyer can proceed without avoidable surprises.
